Basic needs for raising chickens at home

How to Raising chickens at home

Among the basic requirements of raising chickens at home are the following:

Providing adequate housing for chickens

The floor must be cement, and the dwelling must contain hay, straw, and sawdust on its floor. It is very important to constantly clean and provide proper ventilation, to prevent moisture.

Also, a sufficient number of troughs must be prepared, in which food and drink are placed, and the dwelling should be very protected due to the large number of predatory creatures, which can seek to reach and devour chickens, such as dogs, stray cats, and sometimes even birds of prey, in addition to the large Insects that will try to reach the chicken, such as: cockroaches and flies, which cause the transmission of diseases and epidemics to it.

Provide heating for chickens in winter

It is very important in the winter season to provide adequate heating inside the house of chickens, in order to avoid contracting respiratory diseases or sometimes death, especially from young birds due to their high sensitivity to the surrounding environment.

Provide adequate lighting for chickens

If they can be provided, and it is important to provide a thermoelectric lamp (which provides light and warmth at the same time) and runs it continuously - throughout the day - for the young chicks from one week to 20 weeks of age, which is very important to encourage the growth and vitality of the young ones. A lamp like this is from the farmer's store. If the number of chickens is few, it is possible to suffice with an ordinary lamp with a capacity of 75 to 100 watts to perform the function, and if the chicks are crowded around a lot, this may mean that they are feeling cold, and are trying to get warmth from their body heat, and then it will be necessary to bring the lamp closer to them or to strengthen it.

 Provide good nutrition for chickens

Chickens must be given the appropriate food, as there are special feeds that can be purchased from the markets, and it is necessary to check the water daily to ensure that there is no shortage of fluids.

Chickens need a lot of food to produce their eggs and young, so one of the best ways to feed them is to give them leftovers or leftovers from food preparation in the kitchen, such as leftover vegetables and fruits, but attention must be paid to what is given to them of the leftovers, so they should not be given any food that contains meat. Or any leftovers for all meat products.

It may also be served with cooked rice, pasta, potatoes, corn, bread, or legumes; Such as: raw lentils, or raw rice, in addition to barley.

Feeders should also be cleaned after each meal, in order not to leave the opportunity for shrivels that result in the growth of disease-causing microbes and fungi.

Vaccination of chickens to prevent disease

It is very important in raising these birds to vaccinate them with the necessary vaccines to continue their growth without being exposed to common diseases among poultry, especially in the early period of their life.

It may sometimes be difficult to identify chicken diseases because of the lack of ease in diagnosing symptoms for people who are novice in this field, and therefore there may be a need to ask and consult experts in the field.

Keeping chickens clean and protected from diseases

As for the means of prevention that can be followed to avoid the occurrence and transmission of diseases to domestic chickens, they are as follows:

Continuously cleaning chicken houses and pots, and keeping the floor and nests dry, and the “habit of predation” can be controlled by avoiding crowding among chickens, by providing the appropriate large space determined by the number of birds present.

Not to raise more than one type of poultry in the same house, but it is necessary to separate them. The veterinarian should be referred to the veterinarian in the event of seeing or observing any symptom that indicates that she is ill.

Dispose of chicken waste in places far from homes, and spray waste as a precaution if possible, in order to avoid the spread of diseases.

The upper part of the chicken's beaks should be trimmed on the seventh to tenth day, to prevent the habit of predation (that is, chickens cracking eggs with their beaks), and to avoid wasting feed.

Sorting between poultry in terms of broilers and chickens.

Benefits of raising chickens at home

Breeding chickens is beneficial in many ways , the most important of which are the following:

 Helps fight harmful pests

Like flies, mosquitoes, insects, and bugs, chickens eat them in the garden, so they are well fed, and the plants will grow as they are supposed to.

Provides the breeder with fresh eggs

In terms of health, it is better for your health than buying it from the stores, as it has more vitamin A, vitamin E, omega-3, and beta-carotene, and less saturated fat.

It is the best fertilizer your home garden needs

Chicken droppings are one of the best things that can be used as fertilizer for plants grown in the home garden.

They are friendly house birds

Most domestic chicken breeds form a real bond with their owners, and it has many benefits other than getting eggs every morning , raising chickens is good for ensuring a healthy home garden, and having wonderful pets that children love.

The best way to ensure the health of the chickens is to ensure that the appropriate coop is provided, and the nesting boxes, ventilation, etc. are provided.

Make everyone have a good time

It's not just about fresh eggs, which you'll be able to grab every morning, they add fun to everyone, but they're also great for gardeners and family pets.

Disadvantages of raising chickens at home

There are some disadvantages that you should pay attention to before deciding to raise chickens at home, including the following:

Chicken takes up a lot of space

Outdoor space is required for the birds if the breeder decides to have a large number of them, and their chicken coop should be large enough, containing at least 3 square feet (91.m ) per chicken.

The people of the house may relate to it

Chickens are more than just a house bird for some people. They are more like pets like a dog or a cat, but they are more prone to accidents and diseases, because they live outside, and may be attacked by predators.

Chickens can live longer than other pets

Chickens can live up to 12 years, which is good for lovers of these birds, but it is important to consider their life span, and not think about the future from the start.

Chicken can be expensive

A chicken costs about $5 each, a coop would cost at least a few hundred dollars and could run into thousands of dollars, and would need daily feed, feeders, nesting boxes, and health care.

It makes a lot of noise

While chickens aren't exactly loud, they can certainly make a loud noise, and can be very loud, if there are a large number of chickens.

Chicken takes time every day

Taking care of chickens does not require time, but certainly time and energy every day, and every morning the breeder will need to provide feed, water, let them out of the cages and run and move around for a while, collect eggs, care and clean every evening.

It can destroy plants

If a breeder has weeds and plants in his manicured garden, he certainly does not want to leave the chickens free in the midst of it all, because it can destroy them.
