The anteater , one of four species of toothless mammals,  is an insectivorous anteater found in tropical savannas and forests from southern Mexico to Paraguay and northern Argentina. They are long-tailed animals with skulls and long tubular mouths. Its mouth opening is small, but its salivary glands are large and secrete antsSticky saliva on the worm-like tongue, which can be up to 60 cm (24 in) long in the giant anteater. Ants live alone or in pairs and feed mainly on termites and other ants. They capture their prey by inserting their tongues into the nests of insects, which they tear with the long, sharp, curved claws of their front feet; It also uses claws to defend itself. Giant and small anteaters use their hind legs and tail as a tripod when threatened, adapting their forelimbs to attack against attackers and aggressors.

Giant anteater

The giant anteater, sometimes called the bear anteater, is the largest member of the anteater family and is popular in the tropical grasslands of Venezuela, where it is still common. It was once found in the lowland forests of Central America and still lives in the Amazon basin south to the grasslands of Paraguay and Argentina. The giant anteater is gray in color with a white diagonal black stripe on each shoulder. The giant anteater is about 1.8 m (6 ft) long, including a long, bushy tail, and weighs up to 40 kg (88 lb). The giant anteater is primarily a diurnal animal, but in areas near human settlements it is most active at night. And to eat ants Giants have a keen sense of smell, and the giant anteater is also a good swimmer. It does not appear to use dens or other resting places on a permanent basis, but instead chooses a secluded place where it can curl up to rest, its massive tail covering its head and body. Females bear one baby after a gestation period of about 190 days. The baby anteater looks identical to the hanging anteater, except for the size, of an adult, and a baby giant anteater rides on its mother's back as she travels. The giant anteater is the longest-lived anteater. It has reportedly lived in captivity for about 25 years.

Unlike the giant anteater, the tandoora is an arboreal as well as terrestrial animal. They are somewhat similar in size to about 1.2 m (4 ft) in length, including the almost hairless tail, which is used for climbing. They are often with a black "jacket" around the shoulders and across the body, but some are all brown or all black. The tandoora has shorter fur and a relatively shorter mouth than the giant anteater.

Tamandouh , which means "ant hunter" in the Tupi language of eastern Brazil, eats both termites and ants and often uses the same path day after day in search of food. Although many species of ants are eaten by the Tanduwa they are selective, eating relatively few ants from any given colony and avoiding those ants that have painful bites or stings, such as the military ants Trees or in the ground and is found northern timendua from eastern Mexico to northwestern South America. It is found in southern Tamanda from the island of Trinidad south to northern Argentina.

Also known as the two-toed or pygmy anteater, it is the smallest and least known member of the family. The silky anteater is found from southern Mexico south to Bolivia and Brazil. It is not rare but difficult to spot because it is nocturnal and lives high in trees. It is also exquisitely camouflaged, with its yellowish silky coat matching the color and texture of the fibrous seed masses produced by the silk cotton tree during the day. Silk ants rarely weigh more than 300 grams. The maximum total length of the animal is about 44 cm (17 in). About half of this length is the tail.. The silk anteater has four toes and claws at the front of the foot, while the giant anteater has three toes and prominent claws surrounded by two small toes. Males live on 5 to 10 hectares (12-25 acres) of land that overlaps that of many females.
