Lifestyle

Civets are usually solitary and live in hollows of trees, among rocks, and in similar places, coming out to feed at night. With the exception of tree civet cats, civet cats are mainly terrestrial animals and civets feed on small animals and vegetables. Their droppings usually consist of two or three young.

Extracting fragrance from a civet cat

The anal glands of civet cats open under the tail in a large pouch in which a musky-like sebum accumulates. This secretion, known as civet, is used by animals to mark the areas where they live. Civet secretion is used commercially in the perfume industry. Additionally, coffee beans fermented within the digestive tract of civets in the Philippines and Indonesia are sometimes used to improve the taste of coffee.
