Shape and properties

The crocodile has eyes and ears above its long head and protrudes slightly above the water when the crocodile floats to the surface, as it often does. True crocodiles and crocodile-likes can be distinguished by the shape of their jaws and teeth. Alligators have a wide, U -shaped noseand have an "excessive bite"; This means that all the teeth of the lower jaw fit into the teeth of the upper jaw. The large fourth tooth on each side of the crocodile's lower jaw fits into its socket in the upper jaw. Usually, no lower teeth appear when the mouth is closed. In contrast, true crocodiles have a narrow V -shaped noseThe large fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw protrudes outside the snout when the mouth is closed.

the behavior

Crocodiles are carnivores and live along the edges of permanent bodies of water, such as lakes, swamps, and rivers. They usually dig burrows in which to rest and avoid harsh weather conditions. The average lifespan of an alligator is about 50 years in the wild. However, there have been reports of some specimens over 70 years of age in captivity.

food

The adult crocodile feeds mainly on fish, small mammals and birds, but may occasionally feed on prey the size of deer or cattle.

reproduction

Male crocodiles make a long roar. During the breeding season, the female builds a nest from a pile of detritus and plants in which she buries about 20 to 70 eggs with a hard shell. Then she guards the eggs and may be dangerous at this time. Members of this species usually avoid humans.

American alligator

The American alligator, the largest alligator, is found in the southeastern United States. It is black with yellow streaks when young and is generally brown in adulthood. The maximum length is about 5.8 m (19 ft), but usually ranges from about 1.8 to 3.7 m (6 to 12 ft). The American alligator is hunted for its skin, and its young have been sold in large numbers as pets. It disappeared from many areas where it once abounded and was later granted legal protection from poachers until it returned in excellent shape and limited hunting seasons were established again.

Chinese alligator

The Chinese alligator is a much smaller and unknown reptile found in the Yangtze River region of China. It is similar to the larger form but has a maximum length of about 2.1 m (7 ft) - although it usually grows to 1.5 m - and is black with faint yellow markings. It is believed that fewer than 100 Chinese crocodiles survive, and thus the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN) critically endangered.
