Keeping garlic fresh Ways to store garlic for a long time

There are various ways to preserve garlic for a long time, such as freezing, drying, oiling, and pickling. Also, you can keep your garlic plants healthy and succulent for a long time with the proper ways to keep garlic fresh. Here you can learn how to store garlic at home.

Garlic is known as a herb, but in fact, edible garlic is the onion of the garlic plant, which has a special and strong taste close to that of edible onion. Garlic is used to cook all kinds of food and sometimes for medicinal purposes. Fresh garlic can be obtained from your local grocery store or from your own garden, and if you know how to store garlic properly, you can store it for a long time. Here, the star teaches you the right ways to store garlic.

Basic tips for buying and storing garlic for a long time

1- At the time of purchase, make sure that the garlic is fresh, because the fresher the garlic, the longer its shelf life. For this purpose, pay attention to these two points:

Garlic onions should have a dry, papery skin and no sprouts. Tender garlic plants indicate that the garlic is overripe and cannot be stored for a long time.

Avoid buying crushed or store-bought garlic.

2- Let the garlic plant dry before storing it. Drying garlic before storing makes its flavor more intense.

Wash the fresh garlic bush and dry it for a week in a dark place without moisture, you can hang the garlic by the stem to dry.

Garlic should be kept at room temperature. Many people think they need to refrigerate their garlic, but this is wrong, as garlic is best kept at a cool room temperature around 60°F (16°C).

3- Keeping garlic cold or freezing it is a bad idea. Because it spoils garlic. Refrigerating garlic increases moisture in it and leads to mold growth and rotting garlic.

If you have freshly minced or peeled garlic cloves, you can put them in an airtight container and refrigerate them, but you should use them as soon as possible.

It is not recommended to freeze garlic, as freezing will alter the flavor of the garlic.

4- Keep the garlic in a well-ventilated place. Storing garlic in a well-ventilated area will allow the garlic to breathe and extend its life.

Garlic can be stored in cheesecloth, a wire basket, a small container with holes for ventilation, or even a paper bag.

Do not store fresh garlic in plastic bags or airtight containers, as this will cause the garlic to rot or germinate.

5- Keep fresh garlic bushes in a dry and dark place. A kitchen cupboard or a shaded corner above your kitchen is a good place for this. Keep garlic away from sunlight and moisture to prevent it from sprouting.

6- As soon as a garlic bush is opened, you must consume it quickly, because when a garlic bush is opened, its shelf life is greatly reduced. If the garlic becomes mushy or the flower in the center turns green, you should throw it away. If the garlic bush has not been opened, you can store it for up to 8 weeks.

Different ways to store garlic for a long time

Method 1: Preserving garlic by freezing

Although some people are against freezing garlic, as mentioned above, freezing changes the texture and flavor of the garlic. But freezing can be convenient for people who rarely use garlic

For this purpose, you can freeze garlic in one of two ways:

1- Take out the garlic cloves and peel them, then put them in a plastic container or aluminum foil or wrap them in a freezer bag and put them in the freezer. You can take as many garlic cloves as you like.

2- You can peel and chop the garlic cloves finely or grind them. Then put the garlic in a plastic freezer bag or in a container in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer.

The second method: keeping garlic in oil

There is a lot of controversy surrounding storing garlic in oil, because storing garlic in oil at room temperature has been linked to the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which can cause a fatal disease called botulism. However, if garlic is stored in oil in the freezer, the risk of contracting these bacteria goes away.

Ways to preserve garlic in oil:

1- Peel the garlic cloves, place them in a glass or plastic bowl, and pour the oil over the top of the bowl. Then close the container tightly and put it directly in the refrigerator. If necessary, use a spoon to remove the garlic.

2- Put one part of minced garlic and two parts of olive oil in a blender and mix well to obtain a puree of garlic and olive oil. Then put the puree in the freezer container with a tight-fitting lid and put it in the freezer.

The third method: preserving garlic in vinegar

You can put garlic cloves in white vinegar (like pickle) and store in the refrigerator for up to four months. To do this, put minced garlic cloves in a glass jar, then fill the space inside the jar with white vinegar, close the jar tightly and put it in the refrigerator.

Note: To add more flavor to pickled garlic, you can add 1 tablespoon of salt (per cup of liquid) along with dried herbs, such as red pepper flakes, oregano, and rosemary, then shake the jar to mix the ingredients. Mix well.

Although pickled garlic in the refrigerator should stay healthy for up to four months, if you see signs of mold forming on the surface of the liquid, you should discard the contents of the container. Never store pickled garlic at room temperature, as it spoils very quickly.

Fourth method: dry garlic

Another easy way to preserve garlic is to dry it. Dehydrated garlic is pressed, so even if you have a lot of dehydrated garlic, it doesn't take up much space. When you use dried garlic in cooking, it absorbs water and gives your food a great flavor.

To dry garlic, first cut them in half. Then put the garlic on the baking sheet and cook it at 140 F (60 C) for two hours. Then change the heat to 130 and wait for the garlic to dry completely.
