Prevent mold from forming on a shower curtain and how to wash it

Due to the hot and humid environment of the bathroom, the shower curtain is quite prone to the presence of mildew and mold. There are various ways to prevent mildew in the shower curtain and to clean it, including using the washing machine, washing hands, and so on.

The bathroom is one of the sensitive points in the house that is constantly exposed to a lot of heat and moisture. If your bathroom has a sunroof, you're in luck, because the sun will do half the work for you! But where there is no window, a respirator is used to ventilate the moisture. It is recommended not to close these vents even in the cooler seasons of the year or to ensure that the bathroom heater is hygienic so that it can heat the space and help remove moisture from the air after a shower. Because the remaining moisture in this small and closed environment can provide a favorable environment for the growth of all kinds of bacteria and fungi on bathroom items such as curtains. But what should be done to prevent mold in the shower curtain?

Among the items in the bathroom, one of the things that can make the bathroom interior more attractive with its clean and elegant look is the shower divider curtain. The curtain chosen for these spaces must be resistant to the humidity of the environment and must be highly washable. Meanwhile, PVC waterproof curtains can also be a suitable choice. The point here is that if you soak your shower curtain in the salt water solution for a period of time right after you buy it, mold and mildew will never grow on it. Of course, that doesn't make you need to clean your bathroom periodically!

How to wash a shower curtain

First of all, it is necessary to read the curtain label, obtain the necessary information about the type of fabric, the appropriate washing temperature and even ironing, if necessary, and then use the following methods to wash and prevent the shower curtain from becoming moldy.

1. Using the washing machine

First, check out the pendants and rings. If they are also dirty, if they are of the same type of curtains, you can wash them together, otherwise, in most cases, you can clean the dust and soap scum with a damp cloth.

Considering the material of most plastic shower curtains, it is best to wash the curtain in cold water and on a mild level in the washing machine.

It is also necessary to know that the plastics near the softeners will cause an unpleasant smell that is not very pleasant, instead adding a cup of vinegar to the washing up liquid can help it to be more tidy. If your shower curtain material is fabric and water-resistant, you can use warm water and a stronger detergent such as Tide or Persil.

It is not necessary to use a dryer. After washing, just hang the curtain to dry by itself.

Depending on the type of fabric, in some cases, you can use ironing at a suitable temperature. Although it is generally recommended to hang shower curtains to dry, please note that when the curtain is dry, it is necessary to open the bathroom window or turn on the fan to remove moisture.

2. Using a washing machine with a towel!

To remove stains and dirt from the surface, you can put the shower curtain in the washing machine along with the towel. In this case, the towel will play the role of scotch tape, and the curtain will be cleaner. In addition to using a washcloth, you can mix half a cup of vinegar with the washing-up liquid. It should be noted that if the curtain has deeper and wider stains and lumps, this method does not work and you need to use other methods.

3. Hand wash the shower curtain

Lay out the shower curtain on a flat surface, and clean both sides with a sponge dampened in soapy water.

Then wash with warm water and dry in the sun.

At the same time, keep in mind that the shower curtain should not be rolled up or pressed to remove water. In this case, a comment is enough.

Remove remaining mildew stains after washing

1. Use of bleach

If mold remains on the curtain after washing, depending on the material and resistance of the curtain, you can use stronger detergents, for example, the use of bleach is effective in this case. In this way, according to the bleach instructions, pour the right amount of water and bleach solution on the curtain and leave the curtain in this solution for at least four hours or better, overnight and the stains are cleaned, then washed and the fabric, dried

2. Use of chlorine

If your shower curtain is white and made of natural fabrics like linen or linen, you can use chlorine bleach and water. Note, however, that chlorine bleach is a strong stuff, so it takes about 15 to 30 minutes to remove stains, and using too much can cause fabric to yellow, have holes, or flimsy.

3. Use lemon juice

If you are allergic to chemicals, don't worry because there are always more natural solutions out there. You can soak the curtain in a mixture of warm soap and water, then rinse it and apply lemon juice to the curtain and dry it in the sun.

The conclusion

Do not forget that one of the most important requirements for housekeeping is periodic cleaning of the bathroom. Because despite the high humidity of this space, there is a good chance that all kinds of fungus and mold can grow. Our other recommendation is that if your shower curtains are made of cheap and light vinyl fabric, it is best to change them and buy a new one after you have washed it a few times and used it for several months.
