Deep breathing:   If you feel psychological pressure or a desire to express and empty your emotions, deep breathing is a good emotion management technique.  Because it helps the body to restore and maintain balance.

The deep breathing method is done by:

  • Inhale and count to 4
  • Hold your breath for a count of 4
  • Exhale and count to 4
  • Hold your breath and count to 4

Using the Senses to Manage Emotions:   One of the effective methods of managing emotions is to engage the senses.  Because a person who suffers from a psychological crisis or panic attack, it is difficult for him to focus on the present and the surrounding assets.  Rather, he may suffer from strange fantasies and delusions that do not exist in reality.

So a person can bring himself back to reality by splashing cold water on the face, singing or naming things he sees or feels.

Movement and change of location:   in case you feel that the tension has become too great.  The simplest thing you can do is move. If you are sitting, walking, try moving your arms and legs to reduce feelings of stress, manage emotions, and flush toxins out of the body.

Getting rid of physical tension:   If you suffer from tension headaches, or pain due to constant sitting or muscle tension, and this causes you stress.  Get rid of it by stretching and doing some exercise to get rid of the feeling of tightness in the chest that prevents you from properly managing your emotions and causes you distress.

Talk to someone:   Talking helps you express your emotions rather than avoiding them.  This makes it easier for them to accept and deal with them better

Practice accepting your emotions  : Try not to be hard on yourself in judgment, but rather be kind to yourself, accept your emotions and allow your feelings to come out unchecked.

Wrong methods of managing emotions

Not all emotional management techniques or methods are correct, many of them are wrong practices that a person does thinking that he is doing something good, and what he is really doing is causing more harm to himself:

  • denial
  • pull out
  • bullying
  • bodilyharm
  • addiction

Denial  : It is when a person refuses to accept his feelings, for example, suppose that someone lost his job.  This caused him a psychological crisis, and instead of dealing with the issue properly, he denied the existence of the problem and pretended that he was fine.  Until finally burst from the accumulation of negative feelings and emotions.

Withdrawal:   It is when a person avoids other people or activities he was previously engaged in.  It falls within the wrong methods of managing emotions, and let's go back to the previous example. A person who has lost his job may withdraw from social sessions, that thinking he has become unwanted.

Withdrawal has significant negative effects such as excessive isolation, misunderstanding, and reinforcing anger to enter a vicious circle and distracting thinking.

Bullying:   A person may suffer from a crisis in the past or another crisis, so his way of dealing with it is to bully weak people.  A bully often has poor emotional management and difficulty with it.  Therefore, he resorts to bullying as a ploy to fill the gaps he has and compensate for the shortcomings he has.  Instead of solving his problem, he causes problems for others.

Physical harm:   A person may fall into a great calmness that is stronger than his patience, so he resorts to a very wrong method, which is self-harm.  The harm does not have to be painful, such as trying to commit suicide.  Rather, it is possible for him to harm himself psychologically by despising and not appreciating himself.

Physical abuse is more common in adolescents, people of weak faith, or those suffering from mental abuse.  The harm can be mild physical or reach the point of suicide.

Addiction:   One of the techniques for managing negative emotions is addiction.  So that a person fails to rise again, for example, and establish himself after bankruptcy or adapt to a new life, so he resorts to drinking alcohol or drugs.

The importance of managing emotions

Emotions are a natural part of human feelings.  But if he does not follow the correct methods of managing emotions, he resorts to special methods such as denying these emotions.  This can lead to many negative consequences.

  • Managing emotions helps a person make better decisions, whether those decisions are big or small
  • Understanding emotions helps a person greatly understand the triggers of these emotions.  For example, fully understanding his anger helps him understand what triggers the tantrum, and thus the triggers can be avoided, or dealt with better.
  • Acceptance of emotions helps a person deal with things logically rather than dealing with them emotionally.  Or making wrong decisions because of not thinking from an impartial point of view without indulging in feelings
  • Managing your emotions properly is as important as maintaining physical health.  Because emotions affect the way we think.
  • Not allowing emotions to control us: It is normal for a person to feel sad, exhausted, or angry from time to time.  But if a person allows these negative emotions to control him, they can make his condition worse and make him lose his faith and self-confidence.
